- Mar 09, 2013 · I have L31 '880' block sitting on stand and when I compared against 90 TBI block there were very few differences worthy of mention (other than stated previously). The biggest issue when bolting vortec heads onto stock TBI short block is everything else.

General Motors created its 5.7L Vortec in the 1990s. It was designed for use with larger pickup trucks. The huge V8 power was the last of its 350 engine design. The L31 series engine was the motor that was selected to move GM into the future. This L31 engine is an identical copy of what was used in the early 1950s.

Now to your question at hand the biggest difference between a standard 350 and a 350 Magnum (or 5.7 and 5.7 Magnum) was typically a mild bump in the cam and perhaps compression.
